The Right to Own Students Language
When is it really accepted to talk using ones own language, that is the real question. In a academic setting should a student be able to use there own tongue, yes they should. The Conference on College Composition and Communication clearly states, “We affirm the students’ right to their own patterns and varieties of language” Writing is about expressing who you are, we are always thought to be unique and to stick out. I have found that “the man” as in teachers and etc. like to make students write in one style. A type of style that is non-risky, and plain old boring. It really does not take a lot for someone to write in the exact way they are told. The sign of a good writer is to take a risk and step outside of the comfort zone, because that is when great things happen. Think of all the great things we would not have if people just settled, we would not have some of the greatest works of art ever created.
Think of author J.K. Rowling, she was told numerous times that her story wasn't good enough and it was to weird, but did that stop her? No. Look at Eminem, if he listened to what everyone said about him, he was white and shouldn't rap. He took it to the next level. Nothing great is ever created by doing what is expected. You need to shatter expectations. Thats when you become great.
